An apparatus for the uniform preheating of plastics granules while stationary comprises a preheating unit 16 consisting of an outer jacket 31 surrounding an inner perforated structure 26 of tubular shape made of a non-corrosive material with a screen of fine mesh on the inner surfaces. The lower end of the tube is closed by a gate 24 and the plastics granules are fed into the tube from a hopper 43 via a measuring device 44. The plastics material is held in place within the tube by a plunger 39 having a head 42 of p.t.f.e. acting to prevent heated gas escaping from the top of the tube and serving to eject the granules from the tube when heated. Hot gas at a pressure of 3 to 4 p.s.i.g. is passed into the manifold 34 through the perforated wall and out through manifold 34. After passing from the preheating unit the granules pass into a feeding chamber 2 and thence into plasticizing means 6. |
