The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for driving a varnishing device in printing machines. The aim of the invention is to provide a drive for a varnishing device in printing machines, with which drive universal adaptation to printing-related requirements can be achieved. The object of the invention, to develop a method and an apparatus for a drive for a varnishing device in printing machines with which the rollers feeding the varnishing film can be driven synchronously as well as in reversed operation and, at the same time, the varnishing film is prevented from drying on the rollers during brief stoppages of the machine, is achieved in that the varnish-feeding rollers are driven by a speed-controllable electric motor whose direction of rotation can be reversed - and the varnishing film is fed in synchronous operation with the varnish applicator roller - and, after actuating the switch to reverse the direction of rotation of the electric motor, the varnishing film is fed to the varnish applicator roller in reversed operation - and in that, during a brief stoppage of the machine, the varnish-feeding rollers are kept in rotation by the electric motor in synchronous or reversed operation.
