PURPOSE:To provide an ophthalmic composition containing a specific benzalkonium chloride as a main component, having excellent bactericidal activity and low adsorptivity to contact lens, free from irritation to the eye and useful as a bactericidal agent, preservative, etc., of contact lens. CONSTITUTION:The objective ophthalmic composition having bactericidal or antibacterial activity can be produced by using a benzalkonium chloride of formula (about >= 85% of R is 8-12C alkyl) as an active component. Benzalkonium chloride having 8-12C R group exhibits excellent bactericidal effect and has outstanding properties of low adsorptivity to contact lens and free from eye irritation. It is necessary to use a benzalkonium chloride wherein the amount of 8-12C side chain R accounts for >= 85%, preferably >= 95% of the whole side chain R. The concentration of the compound is preferably about 0.001-0.2%. It is used as a bactericidal agent, perservative, cleaning agent, wetting agent, etc., of contact lens.
