PURPOSE:To improve the slice level margin by using a waveform equalizing circuit exclusive for a gate signal generating circuit so as to obtain a waveform formed cutting of largely on the front side of the input signal waveform thereby reducing the rate of exceeding a slice level due to noise. CONSTITUTION:A reproducing signal fed to a waveform equalizing circuit 11 is branched and fed to a waveform equalizing circuit 12, which applies equalization the input waveform into an asymmetrical waveform where the front side skirt part is largely cut off with respect to the peak level of the reproduced signal waveform. The output signal of the circuit 12 is fed to a gate signal generating circuit 8. Thus, the potential difference between the slice level in the circuit 8 and the front skirt part of the input signal waveform is increased, the rate of exceeding the slice level due to noise is reduced so as to improve the read slice level margin of the recording/reproducing system.
