Sintered electrodes are formed by hot rolling metallic powdered material supplied from a hopper 1 into rollers 4 which are directly heated by electrical resistance and the sintered rolled strip 5 may be optionally cold rolled at 6 prior to stamping to shape at 7. A reinforcing fabric 8 such as Ni may be incorporated in the strip. Raney alloys i.e. alloys of Ni or Co with Al, Mg, Si or Zn may be used as the metallic powder and in a preferred embodiment a mixture of Raney Ni alloy powder 30 micron size and carbonyl Ni 6 micron size is rolled. The sintered electrodes may be activated with potassium hydroxide for use as gas diffusion electrodes.
