PURPOSE:To reduce a moving distance of a steering wheel toward the rear of a car room during collision, by a method wherein an engaging member, securing a steering column, into which a steering shaft is inserted, to a car body, is released from coupling by dint of a given impact load or more. CONSTITUTION:The one end of a steering column 30 is supported by a steering support member 14 at the one end of a steering bracket 26, having the one end secured to an upper dash panel 10, to secure it to a car body. The lower part of the steering column is coupled to a steering bracket through the medium of a link member 46, and the further lower part thereof is coupled to an engaging member 38 of a lower dash panel 16 through a lower bracket 48 to secure it to the car body. In which case, when an impact load on the car body exceeds a given value, the link member 46 is moved to release the engaging member 38. The steering column 30 is rotated upward in a direction, in which a steering wheel 32 is moved upward, around a support part, formed by the steering column support member 14 and serving as a fulcrum, resulting in reduction of a moving distance of the steering wheel toward the rear side of a car room. |
