This invention relates to a covering cap for covering articles, especially an inflatable air cushion which is arranged inside the steering wheel rim of a motor vehicle, which cap is composed of a flat supporting part having a tear-off line which is preferably shaped like a double T and along which the covered article (2) can be brought outwards via the supporting part (8) which forms the bent up flap, and of edge beads (5) which are provided in the peripheral region of the supporting part (8) and can be locked onto corresponding edge strips (4) of a casing (1) to form a closed chamber (7). With a view to devising a covering cap which protects the vehicle driver relatively well when the motor vehicle is operating normally and can simultaneously withstand large mechanical loads, but which on the other hand permits tearing off along the provided tear-off line so that the air cushion provided can be discharged without further action in the event of a frontal collision, provision is made under this invention for the covering cap (6) to take the form of an elastic foamed body and for the tear-off line to be formed by fuses (12) inside the supporting part (8) of the covering cap (6). <IMAGE>
