A device for the production of temporary dental crown which may closely approximate the shape of a tooth being restored and which enables the crown to be easily taken off the matrix and the die without undergoing damage comprises a plunger (9) carrying at one end thereof a replaceable die (12) in alignment with a recess (6) in a matrix (4). The interior of the recess (6) is occupied by an elastic ring (7) whose internal diameter will usually be smaller than the maximum cross-sectional diameter of the die. The recess (6) opens out into a wider recess (8) whose cross-section is matched to the cross-section of the forward end of a cylinder (10) in which the plunger (9) is able to travel and which is capable of undergoing reciprocating movement when the plunger undergoes such movement. The forward end of the cylinder (10) carries a diaphragm (15) for acting on a generally pre-heated plastics foil placed in the recess (8) to cause its displacement into the elastic ring (7) on contacting of the diaphragm (15) by the die (12).
