A process for forming a color image is disclosed, comprising developing a silver halide photographic material using a developer containing an aromatic primary amine in the presence of at least one couplers represented by the following formulae (I) and (II): <CHEM> wherein R1 represents an alkyl group, an aryl group, or a heterocyclic group; R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a substituent group; and X represents a hydrogen atom or a coupling split-off group: <CHEM> wherein R1 and X have the same meanings as in the formula (I), respectively; and R'2 represents an alkyl group, an aryl group, an alkylthio group, an arylthio group, or a heterocyclic thio group. According to the process of the invention, sensitivity, gradation (gamma) and color density of the developed image are improved.
