A gel copolymer which is principally composed of (A) a glycidyl monovinyl ester or glycidyl monovinyl ether and (B) an alkylene glycol divinyl ester, component A being cross-linked by component B, has substituents which are bound via epoxy groups in the component A and to which further groups, particularly ligands, can be covalently bonded.
<??>The substituent may contain a glycidyl group and be attached to the (A) (B) copolymer by ring-opening of the copolymer glycidyl groups using water. Other embodiments involve the use of substituents containing a COOH group, formyl group, thiol group or amino or substituted amino group.
<??>Specified ligands bound to these substituents are lectin, heparin, protein A, serum albumin, a triazine dyestuff, actiflavine, iminodiacetic acid, phenylboric acid, EDTA, biotin and N-acetylglucosamine. The use of the resulting copolymers as active supports in affinity chromatography is described.
