PURPOSE:To surely read bar code by merely gripping a hand scanner by providing a plural optical sensors in a grip part and detecting the gripped state to supply power to the hand scanner body. CONSTITUTION:Photo transistors (TR) P1, P2-Pn as optical sensors are provided to a grip part 2 of a hand scanner body 1 provided with an optical detector 4 which reads the bar code. When the hand scanner body 1 is gripped with a hand to intercept the light incident on any of photo TRs P1-Pn, the corresponding photo TR is made conductive and a current flows from a DC power source +Vcc through a resistance R1. Then, the output terminal of an open collector buffer B1 goes to the low level, and power is supplied to a relay coil RC from the DC power source +Vcc to energize it, and a relay switch RS is turned on, and a constant voltage is supplied to a control circuit 17 from a constant voltage circuit 16 to operate a scanner circuit 6.
