<p>Chromophore-contg. sunscreen cpds. of formula X-B-Z (I) are new, where X=substd., carbonyl-contg. aromatic ring-contg. chromophore moiety, having at least one absorption max. having a molar absorptivity of at least 9,000 (at least 20,000) in the range 320-400 nm, as an independent chromophore in a separate molecule; Z=substd., carbonyl-contg. aromatic ring-contg. chromophore moiety which as an independent chromophore moiety in a separate molecule would exhibit a molar absorptivity of at least 4,000 (at least 15,000) for at least one wavelength in the range 290-320 nm, but would not exhibit an absorption max. having a molar absorptivity over 9,000 for any wavelength above 320 nm; and B=chemical bond or a linking moiety covalently bonding X and Z such that the electron systems of the chromophore are directly coupled. Sunscreen compsns. contg. (I) are also claimed. Specifically claimed includes 7 cpds. (I), e.g. 4-N,N- dimethyl aminobenzoic acid ester with 4-hydroxy dibenzoylmethane or 4-methoxycinnamic acid ester with 4-hydroxy -4'-methoxydibenzoyl methane.</p> |
