Alpha-(2-alkoxyphenyl)-alpha-chloroacetic acid alkylester of formula(II) was reacted with thiourea at least 75deg. C to give 5-(2- alkoxyphenyl)-2-iminothiazolidine-4-one, which was hydrolysed to give arylthiazolidinones of formula(I) and their salts with base. In formula R=C1-4 alkyl; X=fluoro, chloro or bromo; Y=H, chloro, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy; R1=C1-4 alkyl. (I) are hypoglycaemic agents and inhibitors of aldose reductase, and so are useful for treating chronic diabetic complications. Dose is 0.25-25mg/kg daily.
