NEW MATERIAL:A hydantoin derivative expressed by formula I (R1 and R2 are H, halogen, nitro, lower allkyl or lower alkoxy) and a salt thereof. EXAMPLE:5-hydroxyl-1-benzylhydantoin. USE:Useful as a hypolipemic agent, having very high safety and low toxcity and capable of being orally administered. PREPARATION:For example, glyoxylic acid or a hydrate thereof and an alcohol, e.g. benzyl alcohol, etc., are heated in an aprotic solvent, e.g. benzene or toluene, etc., in the presence of an organic acid catalyst, e.g. p-toluenesulfonic acid, etc. The resultant glyoxylic acid ester, etc., is then reacted with an N-substituted urea, e.g. N-benzylurea, etc., in a solvent, e.g. water, etc., at room temperature - while refluxing to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
