PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a perfume, etc., from an inexpensive raw material in good selectivity in one stage, by reacting hydrogen with nitrobenzene and ethylene glycol in the vapor phase in the presence of a group VIII metal and/or active carbon-containing catalyst. CONSTITUTION:For example, hydrogen is reacted with nitrogenzene and ethylene glycol in the vapor phase in the presence of a group VIII metal of the periodic table of elements and/or active carbon-containing catalyst of Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt or active carbon in the form of powder, grain, lump, flake, molded article, etc., or prepared by supporting, as necessary, the above- mentioned material together with another compound on a carrier at 200-500 deg.C, preferably 250-400 deg.C to advantageously afford the aimed indole or a derivative thereof useful also as a synthetic raw material for amino acids in high purity. |
