PURPOSE:To effectively prevent deposition of polymer to a polymerizer without causing adverse effect to the rate of polymerization and the physical properties of product, by applying a specific compound to the inner wall of a polymerizer and to the part to be contacted with monomer during polymerization prior to the polymerization of vinyl chloride. CONSTITUTION:In the homopolymerization of vinyl chloride or copolymerization of vinyl chloride and a monomer copolymerizable therewith (e.g. ethylene, vinyl acetate, etc.) in an aqueous medium or in bulk, the inner wall of a polymerizer and the part of the polymerization apparatus to which the monomers are to be contacted during polymerization are preliminarily coated with a compound produced by reacting (A) a p-chloromethylated polystyrene [preferably the compound of formula (at least one of R is p-chloromethylphenyl and the others are phenyl; n is 50-5,000)] with (B) a hydroquinone compound (e.g. resorcinol, pyrogallol, etc.) in the presence of a catalyst such as zinc chloride, stannic chloride, etc., at 30-200 deg.C.
