PURPOSE:To determine the optimum characteristic extracting means to identify a writer by observing visually an input character pattern and designating in dialogue the characteristic extracting means in accordance with the type and the characteristic of the input character pattern. CONSTITUTION:The information on a document 3 is photoelectricly converted and sampled by a scanner 4, a digital image 51 is stored into a buffer memory 5 and a character pattern is successively cut out. The i-th character pattern and a characteristic extracting processing menu are displayed side by side to a display console 6, and a user reads a selected characteristic extracting processing number (k). In accordance with the characteristic extracting processing number (k), characteristic parameters 53 and 54 from the i-th character pattern and the standard pattern stored to a file 7 are obtained, an inter- pattern distance D(i and j) is smaller than a threshold THETA(k), and then, the writer number of a standard pattern (j) is registered to a candidate area 55, the joint class of an assembly PSI of a candidate writer number concerning 1-i-1 is newly made into an assembly PSI, stored to an area 56 and the assembly PSI is outputted to an output device 8.
