PURPOSE:Inexpensive polyvinyl alcohol is used as an immobilization carrier and it is combined with a water-soluble polysaccharide which forms gell by contacting with polyvalent metal ions to produce granular immobilization product of high strength with enzyme loss reduced. CONSTITUTION:Polyvinyl alcohol, a water-soluble polysaccharide which is capable of forming gel by contacting with polyvalent metal ions and an enzyme or cell bodies of a microorganism are mixed and the liquid composition is added dropwise in an aqueous medium containing polyvalent metal ions and boric acid to convert the composition into granular gel. The water-soluble polysaccharide is preferably an alkali metal salt of alginic acid, carrageenan, mannan or chitosan.
