A method for producing a plasma arc 2 is described, in the case of which a gas jet is ionised at least partially by the application of a first voltage source 8, and an arc 2 is ignited in the at least partially ionised gas jet by the application of a second voltage source 10. Voltage pulses which are supplied from a high-frequency voltage pulse generator 11 are superimposed on the second arc voltage in order to stabilise the arc.
