The salt reservoir filling device, for a domestic diswashing machine with an ion exchange water softener, has a filling opening in one side wall (6) of the rinsing drum. The filling opening is normally closed by a cover (7) which is hinged about a horizontal axis to drop down into the open position. A filling tray is fitted to the inside surface of the cover (7), with the salt dispensed into the tray with the cover in the open position and fed to the salt reservoir when the cover (7) is reclosed.
