The invention relates to a cylinder head for an internal combustion engine with exhaust and refill ports (2, 3) open to the combustion chamber of the cylinder. At least the land area (8) between the exhaust and refill ports is covered off from the combustion chamber by a heat shield (10) held in the cylinder head (1). It has emerged that despite the heat shield arranged in the land area cracks still occur which lead to impairment of the thermal insulation by the heat shield and adversely affect the mechanical holding of the heat shield. According to the invention, it is proposed, in order to overcome these disadvantages, to design the heat shield (1) in at least two parts and to provide a parting (T) in the land area (8), which runs from one exhaust and refill port (2) to the opposing exhaust and refill port (3). <IMAGE>
