PURPOSE:To facilitate the recognition of a handwritten character by superposing a forecasting deforming vector calculated by the weighted linear sum of a neighboring deforming vector field concerning respective feature points on a standard pattern, and matching the pattern at the section of an input pattern after the standard pattern is deformed. CONSTITUTION:To a standard pattern, a stroke linking rule and an 1:1 stroke corresponding determining method are applied, and the pattern is converted to the pattern having the same number of the picture and the stroke order as the input pattern. Next, the deforming vector group, which is a two-dimensional space vector, from respective feature points of the standard pattern to the corresponding characteristic point on the input pattern is extracted, and the deforming vector field is generated. Finally, concerning to respective feature points of the standard pattern, the forecasting deforming vector is calculated by the weighted linear sum of the deforming vector field at the constant vicinity, and by superposing the forecasting deforming vector, the standard pattern is deformed. The distance between the input pattern and the pattern is calculated.
