NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R<1> and R<2> are H or methyl; X is S or NH when Y is O or X is O when Y is H2; the configuration of 22 and 23-OH is cis). EXAMPLE:(2R, 3S, 22S, 23S, 24S)-24-ethyl-2,3,22,23-tetrahydroxy-B-homo-7-aza-5alpha- cholestan-6-one. USE:A plant growth promoter. The increase of yields of crops such as rice, wheat, soybean, corn, eggplant, potato, etc., can be expected. PREPARATION:A compound of formula I wherein X is NH and Y is O can be produced e.g. by brominating the compound of formula II with bromine in a solvent, treating the product with KOH or NaOH, oxidizing the resultant compound of formula III with periodic acid, converting the resultant compound of formula IV to lactam by a reducing amination reaction and deacetylating the reaction product.
