A folding umbrella (12) has a handle storage compartment (22). The compartment is generally cylindrical and is to receive the central supporting shaft (14) and the mounted folding umbrella mechanism. The shaft is connected to a seat (24) which is slidably supported within the cylindrical housing for movement between axial positions, being locked in the outermost extended position by a sping activated button (26) which is received within an opening (22e) of the housing. Attached to the other end of the shaft is a cap (34) which serves as a grip and as a cover for closing the open end of the cylindrical housing. The cap can be gripped for withdrawing the umbrella mechanism from the housing and, when retracted, the cap mates with the open end of the housing to provide a water resistant seal preventing the escape of water on the umbrella from the housing. |
