Pharmaceutical compositions having use in the prevention of coccidiosis in chickens and anti-viral activity and containing compounds of the general formula: wherein R' is a saturated or unsaturated straight chain aliphatic group having 7 to 11 carbon atoms, R 1 , is a saturated or unsaturated straight or branched chain aliphatic group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R 2 , is methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, n-propyl, or allyl group, at least one of R', R 1 , and R 2 , being an unsaturated group as specified above, and R 3 is hydrogen or a saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acyl group, and, when R 3 is hydrogen, salts thereof are administered orally or parenterally in association with a physioligically innocuous carrier and/or physiologically innocuous wetting and/or dispersing agents. The compositions suitable for the prevention of coccidiosis may also contain one or more additional prophylactic or therapeutic agents, e.g. anti-bacterial agents such as furazolidone, or coccidiostats, such as 2-chloro-4- nitrobenzamide, pyridine-3-sulphonamide, nitrofurazone or sulphaquinoxaline. Also they may contain other substances known to be useful in promoting the growth of poultry or their egg production for example, 4-hydroxy- 3-nitrophenylarsonic acid and antibiotics such as penicillin and penicillin derivatives.</p> |
