Process for the recovery of aluminium and lithium from metal waste which may contain, in addition to these elements, magnesium and other metals such as copper and zirconium, characterised in that the waste is melted in the presence of a flux of one or more than one alkali metal chloride and a chlorinating agent and the components are mixed together, the aluminium and the metals such as copper and zirconium are separated from the lithium, magnesium and aluminium chloride-based slag formed in the process and lithium chloride is recovered from the slag by treatment with an alcohol after transformation of the other chlorides into oxide or hydroxide.
