PURPOSE:To recognize exactly a symbol of a circuit diagram, etc. by providing a symbol recognizing means for extracting a feature point of a boundary of a signal line and the symbol, and recognizing the symbol concerned. CONSTITUTION:A symbol recognizing part 7 refers to a position coordinate of a feature point related to each symbol which has been stored in a symbol feature point table 6, and calculates an area for extracting a feature (feature of a boundary point) of a boundary point of a signal line and the symbol. Subsequently, a recognition of the symbol is executed by extracting the position coordinate of the feature point which has been stored in the feature point table, and the feature of the boundary point contained in said area, and collating a feature of a symbol obtained from information such as a position, a classification, the number of pieces, etc., of the feature point concerned, and a symbol recognition dictionary 8.
