PURPOSE:To obtain shape information on the surface of a metallic mold by providing a measuring instrument provided with a detector which is displaced in the height direction and a moving body provided with a detector which detects the quantity of horizontal movement. CONSTITUTION:The measuring instrument 10 consists of the detector 48 coupled with a slide contactor 42. The measuring instrument 10 is fitted on a moving table and a rotary encoder is provided to the moving table; and a couple of guide rails are projected and bridged between a couple of fitting tables. The fitting tables are seated magnetically on the metallic mold 200 and the measuring instrument 10 is run from a measurement origin position through the moving table. Then, the rotary encoder detects the quantity of horizontal displacement of the moving table and stores an address signal. Further, the detector 48 is displaced according to the surface shape of the metallic mold 200, the contactor 42 is displaced to store information regarding the height. Thus, vertical position information based on the distance along the curved shape of the metallic mold 200 is obtained. Then, it is confirmed whether or not a metallic mold 300 obtained by profile working is in the same shape with the metallic mold 200.
