A method and apparatus for producing continuous surface elements, for example for shelters or protections known as air-supported shelters, in accordance with which a tubular sheet, preferably made from plastic material, is rolled up in a number of layers between two drums which are spaced with respect to each other by a distance which is substantially equal to half the width of the surface element or to entire multiples thereof. Immediately prior to rolling up the tubular sheet between the drums, adhesive is applied to the sheet so that the outer side of the tubular sheet of greater or lesser to the inner side of the tubular sheet in the following rolling-up operation [sic]. After rolling up a suitable number of loops or turns, in accordance with the desired length of the surface element, the rolls are cut principally perpendicularly with respect to the longitudinal direction of the tubular sheet, after which the two outer tubular sheets of the stack thus obtained are separated from each other along their length, and suitable connections or tie rods may be inserted in each individual tubular-sheet section.
