摘要 Copolymers which have been obtained by the copolymerization of one or more polyolefinically unsaturated C4- 14 compounds with one or more straight-chain C2- 10 mono-olefinic compounds are vulcanized by one or more phenol resins in the presence of one or more halides of one or more metals of Group II or III of the Mendel</>aeeff Periodic Table or halides of a heavy metal (the metal having a specific gravity greater than 4) or a mixture of precursors for any such halides. The copolymer may be derived from cyclic, e.g. C5, polyolefinically unsaturated compounds and branched chain mono-olefines. The polyolefinic compound may be a diene and may contain a pair of conjugated double bonds, e.g. dicyclo-pentadiene and the copolymer may contain 0.5-10 mol. per cent of the diene. The mono-olefine may be ethylene or propylene. The copolymer may contain up to 90 mol. per cent of the branched C4- 12 mono-olefine. 1-15% phenol resin may be used and the resin may be a condensation product of a phenol and a C1- 7 aldehyde; the resin may be a trifunctional phenol resin wherein two of the three positions, o-, o- and pto the phenol group are unsubstituted and the remaining position may be substituted with a C4-12 hydrocarbon radical. The phenol resin may contain at least 85% of units of formula <FORM:0992359/C3/1> where R1 and R2 are H, C1- 3 alkyl or a furyl radical, R3 is a C1-12 hydrocarbon, chlorine, nitro or cyano and n is 2-8. The resin may be prepared by condensing formaldehyde with n-tert.-butylphenol, p-octylphenol or p-isooctylphenol. The metal halide may be stannous chloride or iron chloride and the mixture of percursors for such halides may be diphenylbromomethane, N - bromo - succimimide, iron stearate and tin stearate. Before vulcanization up to 50% of other copolymers, e.g. butyl rubber, may be admixed with the original copolymer. Fillers, e.g. carbon black, and stearic acid may be added to the copolymers prior to vulcanization. Specifications 879,233, 880,756, 892,462, 912,975 and 921,511 are referred to.
