Acetaldehyde is prepd. for use as starting material of many organic synthesis. Ethylene is oxidized by contact with metal complex catalyst to give acetaldehyde. The metal complex catalyst is composed of oxygen coordination part, MmXn.Ll[M=Cu, V or Ti; X=Cl, Br, I; L=amide deriv. of phosphate; m, n,=1-4, integer , and ethylene coordination part, M'm'Xn'.L'l' [M'=Pd, Pt; L=amide deriv. of nitrile; m',n',l'=1-4, integer . This reaction is performed in mild condition and gives the product in high yield.
