PURPOSE:To uniformly disperse the catalytic component on a substrate having a large specific surface area by using a surface active agent which forms an aqueous emulsion and disperses uniformly in water in the production of the catalyst suitable to use for a fuel cell. CONSTITUTION:The catalyst which uses phosphoric acid as an electrolyte, and is suitable to use for the fuel cell, is produced by supporting the catalytic active component such as Pt, etc., in a reducing state on the substrate composed of carbon, and dispersed in an aqueous medium in the presence of a reducing agent and the surface active agent. As the surface active agent used in the production of the titled catalyst, a sorbitan fatty acid ester, a polyoxyethylene alkylether, etc., which forms uniform aqueous dispersion are used. Thus, the active component of the catalyst can be highly dispersed on the substrate having a large specific surface area, thereby improving the activity of the catalyst. |
