PURPOSE:To improve operability by detecting a surface of recording paper to be recorded ahead of recording and setting a tabulation based on the results of this detection. CONSTITUTION:A printer is set to 'automatic tabulation setting mode' by operating a key-in means 14 at step n4, and then a carriage 5 is driven by a pulse motor at step n5, moving from a home position. If a vertical ruled line 7 is detected by a detection element 4 at step n7, a digital value on a counter 12 is read at step n8, and a digital value on the counter 12 is written into a random access memory 15 at step n9. Then a count value on the counter 12 is stored in the memory 15. If the arrival of the carriage 5 to the right end is detected at step n10, the carriage 5 returns to a home position by the operation of a pulse motor 18 and the printer is set to 'recording mode' at step n12, thus performing printing/recording on a tabulation corresponding to a vertical ruled line. The operation ends at step n13.
