A process for the non-catalytic thermal hydrodealkylation of alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons comprises preheating hydrocarbon feed oils with hydrogen and passing the preheated mixture through at least two reaction zones, the first being a back-mixing-type reactor and the subsequent reaction zone being a piston flow-type reactor. Hydrogen may be used in amount 2-10 mols per mol of alkyl aromatic in the feed, the temperatures in the reaction zones may be 580‹ to 800‹ C. and the pressure 1 to 60 kg./cm.2 (gauge).
