In the method of recording, the mobile magnetic head for recording/reproduction scans the tape in a to-and-fro motion which may be sinusoidal, triangular or saw-toothed as a function of time. The scanning of the head is carried out in principle perpendicular to its air gap and with a faster speed of motion than the tape running speed. The signals recorded and reproduced are digital audio signals. The device includes for example two mobile heads (5) mounted at the end of a support (10) fixed to an axle (11) itself mounted in bearings (12). The support (10) forms a resonant system together with a torsion wire (9) associated therewith. The support includes mobile coils (7) able to move past permanent magnets (8) in order to sustain the oscillating motion of the support (10). If the elastic restoring element (9) includes a non-linearity, the motion of the support (10) can be of triangular form. The device according to the invention, in the form of a single vibrating head, replaces several rotating heads. It may be mounted in place and instead of the fixed analogue heads of traditional video recorders. The device can also be used for an absolute measurement of distance with respect to an origin. <IMAGE>
