PURPOSE:To detect the erroneous feed of a document, by a method wherein the length of a document passing a document reading position sensor is compared with the size of the document. CONSTITUTION:During reading motion of a document reading position sensor 8, a counter is subtracted each time one pulse driving of a driving pulse motor 7 is effected. Since the counter is set to a document length + alpha, wherein alphais a factor considering unevenness in a sheet, a document feed error and the like, when counter is subtracted each time one pulse driving of the driving pulse motor 7 is effected, when passage of the terminal end of a document 1 in a document reading position sensor 8 for the set document is confirmed, the counter is reduced to zero. Thus, when the counter is reduced to zero before confirmation of passage of the document 1 through the reading position sensor 8, the size of the document 1 under passage is longer than that of the specified document set on a document stand 2 by a document size sensor 15. In this case, it is decided by the sensor that a jam error occurs.
