The invention relates to the automatic ignition of fuels, e.g. wood, coal, oil. The aim of the invention was a) to ignite a filled heating boiler automatically (e.g. so that heat is available early in the morning), b) to make possible in automatic charging installations fault-free and energy-saving operation by reignition in the light-load region. According to the invention, this is achieved in that a burning liquid penetrates the heating material and slowly sets the latter alight. As a result, a small fire is produced, which grows slowly, without smoke and soot.
