<p>Heat-exchanger 11, especially for preheating particulate glass batch or cullet, comprises plurality of tubes 17 through which the batch descends by gravity and around which ascends heating gas (e.g. waste gas from melting furnace 10, the gas being made turbulent by baffles 27.
