A battery separator material is composed of discrete polyolefin pulp fibres in a sufficient amount to heat seal the separator along its edges. The fibres are bound by an organic polymeric binder to form sheet material which may be folded to form an envelope which is heat sealed along at least two opposing edges thereof to form a battery separator.
