The invention comprises 1-isopropylaminoanthraquinone - 5 - sulphonic acid and its alkali metal salts. They are prepared by reacting isopropylamine with anthraquinone 1,5- disulphonic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof in aqueous medium in presence of an oxidizing agent 100-180‹ C. Oxidizing agents used are sodium or potassium chlorate, sodium bromate, arsenic acid or preferably nitrobenzene sulphonic acid and may additionally contain catalytic amounts of a copper salt, e.g. copper sul- phate, or an oxide or salt of magnesium, calcium or zinc. A stoichiometric excess of the amine is used. 1,5 - Bis - isopropylamino anthraquinone is also prepared as a by-product.
