PURPOSE:To optionally set a communication mode corresponding to an opposite side by setting in advance a mode which selects a cipher communication and a non-cipher communication, or the mode which performs only the cipher communication corresponding to an opposite number registered and stored in advance. CONSTITUTION:In a facsimile equipment 1 at a transmission side, an operator designates a communication mode in advance for each of plural telephone numbers registered and stored at a memory 5 within a control circuit 4 from a panel circuit 8. When a call to an opposite which designates a cipher/non-cipher selection mode is performed, it is detected whether a cipher decoding circuit is prepared in an equipment at the opposite side, and based on a detected result, an enciphered or non-enciphered data is sent. When the call to the opposite which designates only a cipher communication mode is placed, the presence/ absence of the cipher decoding circuit at the opposite side is detected, and when no cipher decoding circuit is prepared at the opposite side, an alarm display is performed to the transmission side, and thereby, it is controlled so that no transmission is performed.
