The invention relates to surface layers for sintered hard objects, in particular cutting bits for machining, and to production processes by chemical deposition from the vapour phase. The invention is based on the object of improving the adhesive strength, the wear resistance and the temperature shock resistance of alumina layers for sintered hard objects. The part of the stated object relating to the composition of the surface layer is achieved according to the invention if at least one surface layer predominantly containing alumina consists of a composite alumina/tungsten carbide layer. The part of the stated object relating to the production process is achieved by a single-stage deposition from a vapour phase consisting of AlCl3, WCl6, H2, CO2, C6H6 and Ar, or by two-stage deposition from a vapour phase consisting of AlCl3, WCl6, H2, CO2 and Ar with a subsequent after-treatment in H2, C6H6 and Ar. |
