PURPOSE:To increase the data recording capacity of a magnetic tape, and also, shorten the write time and the read-out time, by shortening a record interval by using write and read-out magnetic heads of two systems. CONSTITUTION:The titled device is provided with the first write and readout heads WH1, RH1, the first switching means S1, a buffer memory 2 which has been connected to this switching means S1, the second write and readout heads WH2, RH2 which have been provided at an interval G, the second switching means S2, and the third switching means S3. A gap of a recording block of a magnetic tape 1 is reduced by storing input/output data at the time of switching the second each head WH2, RH2, in the buffer memory 2, and inputting and outputting them from the first each head WH1, RH1. In this regard, the interval G can be shortened by using the write and readout heads WH1, RH1, WH2, and RH2 of two systems. Also, the recording efficiency on the magnetic tape is improved, and the write time and the read-out time can be shortened.
