PURPOSE:To enable the detection of interface level of a molten liquid hot with a high specified gravity, by detecting the upper level of a top layer and the total weight of two liquids to calculate boundary level of two liquids using the specific gravity of individual liquids and the inner measurement of a container. CONSTITUTION:A molten steel M and a slag S are put into a ladle 1. Then, the upper level (h) of the slag S is detected with an optical type level detector 2 using a image pick up tube and inputted into an arithmetic unit 6 via a level signal transmitter 3. The total weight W of the molten steel M and the slag S are detected with a weight detector 4 using a loadcell and inputted into the arithmetic unit 6 via a weight signal transmitter 5. A setter 7 sets the specific gravity of both the liquids M and S, the inner radius of the top and bottom of the ladle and the inner height H for the arithmetic unit 6 and inputs them. The arithmetic unit 6 uses all these factors and performs specified computations to determine, first, the total capacity of both the liquids M and S, the capacity of the molten steel M and the height of the molten steel M, that is, the interface level hM of both the liquids M and S.
