1455567 Dispersing gases in liquids BOC INTERNATIONAL Ltd 3 Jan 1974 [8 Jan 1973 1 March 1973 26 June 1973] 1027/73 10082/73 and 30236/73 Heading B1C [Also in Division C1] An apparatus for treating liquid 18 with gas includes a compressor or pump 24 for pressurising a stream of the liquid, a first device 28 for introducing a treatment gas into the pressurised stream so as to dissolve therein a part of the treatment gas, and a second device 26 introducing the stream containing dissolved and undissolved gas into a volume 4 of the liquid under turbulent conditions such that the undissolved gas enters the volume of liquid in the form of fine bubbles that either dissolve or are consumed within the volume of liquid. The required turbulence is obtained using orifices or jets of diameter 6-12 mm with the liquid stream at a pressure preferably of 40-80 psig producing fine bubbles in the range 0.05 to 0.15 mm diameter. Gases used may be oxygen, oxygenated air, ozonised oxygen, ozonised air, chlorine, ozone, carbon dioxide or nitrous oxide, but the process and apparatus are especially useful for dissolving a gas within oxygen in an open vessel without the recycling of undissolved oxygen. The invention is described with refrence to installations for treating sewage, Fig. 1 (see also Figs. 2-4, not shown) or water for use in fish farming (see Figs. 5-7, not shown) but may also be useful in fermentation processes such as yeast or penicillin production.
|
