PURPOSE:To save the storage capacity of a storage device by filling file designation information of each text and image data included in a document and its layout information only. CONSTITUTION:In registering a document 20 after being edited in a filing device 14, its name, layout information and a color designation code of a text when a color picture is handled are set as parameters at each test or each image data and the retrieval information of the said document (document name, key word or the like) are added to them and the result is registered in the filing device 14. The registered content is document retrieval information at the head, name and layout information (start point, end point address) of each test data and a color designation code only, and only the information displaying a steal area used actually from the said image data in addition to the name and layout information of each image data.
