PURPOSE:To cope with the detection of mistake of an erroneous position while keeping a high correction capability of missing correction by obtaining a parameter based on a syndrome and error location information and giving the parameter to a 2nd-order error correction circuit in place of a syndrome input. CONSTITUTION:A syndrome S from a syndrome calculation circuit 12 and coefficients sigma and C from a coefficient calculation circuit 16 are given to a missing correction circuit 18. On the other hand, the said syndrome S and the coefficient sigma are given to a parameter calculation circuit 20, in which a parameter Bh is calculated in place of the syndrome input of the 2nd-order error correction circuit 22. The 2nd order error correction circuit 22 uses the parameter Bh to calculate two position information (j, k) at maximum subject to detection of mistake by an error location detection circuit 14 and the result is given to the coefficient calculation circuit 16. The missing correction circuit 18 applies missing correction taking mis-locations (j, k) detected by the 2nd order error correction circuit 22 into account.
