Novel herbicidally active N-methyl-4-pyridones of the formula <IMAGE> in which R represents hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkoxyalkyl, halogenoalkyl, cycloalkyl, optionally substituted aralkyl or one equivalent of an ammonium or metal cation and R1 and R2, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are bonded, represent an optionally substituted heterocyclic radical.
