A valve for regulating a fluid flow through a pipe conduit, comprising a housing, a generally annular valve seat mounted fixedly in the housing and a valve element which interacts with the said valve seat and can be moved towards and away from the valve seat, one of these interacting components being provided with an O ring of a resilient material accommodated in a groove and the other component having an encircling, relatively sharp sealing edge so that, in the closed position of the valve element, the contact between the sealing edge and O ring takes place essentially along a circular line, and the O ring being accommodated in a groove of a design such that, when considered in every axial cross-section, only a part of the surface of the O ring over an arc of 20@-75@ is exposed to the outside for interaction with the sealing edge, the surface into which one of the sides of the opening of the groove merges being configured in such a way that, in each opened position of the valve element, the narrowest passage for the fluid between the valve element and the seat is always bounded by the sealing edge on one side and this narrowest passage lies downstream of the circular line on the O ring. |
