PURPOSE:To obtain the objective catechol compound in high yield, by oxidizing a specific compound such as salicylaldehyde with aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide in a basic aqueous solution in the presence of a metallic compound capable of forming a chelate with said compound. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula (R is H, 1-4C alkyl or OCH3; X is H or 1-3C alkyl) is oxidized in a basic aqueous solution with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide to obtain a catechol compound useful as a polymerization inhibitor or a raw material for pharmaceuticals or agricultural chemicals. The above reaction is carried out in the presence of a metallic compound capable of forming a chelate with the component of formula, e.g. barium hydroxide, lead hydroxide, strontium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide, especially barium hydroxide in the reaction system to suppress the oxidization of catechol compound and the production of tarry polymer caused thereby. The process is advantageous because of high yield of the objective compound, needlessness of the use of reaction vessel made of particular material, etc.
